Biography of DJ Jakub
Jakub was born in 1978 in Gdansk, Poland. It was here in Europe that he discovered and was first exposed to music. His parents influenced him by listening to classic bands such as Pink Floyd and The Beatles. From this foundation he discovered what was currently going on in the music scene which lead to a development of taste for electronic 80s pop synthesizer music. Jakub as a kid used to tape various radio broadcasts and make tapes of his favorite songs, music was always his escape, from the harsh realities of life. After living in what was still communist Poland, Jakub's dad slipped out of the country and sough asylum in the states. Jakub and his mother soon joined him in Seattle, Wa. Upon moving to Seattle, the music Jakub experienced was a total culture shock from what was going on in Europe at the time. This was the land of grunge. Listening to and seeing Seattle bands like Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana in concert inspired Jakub to first start making music. He picked up and electric guitar, played for local punk bands such as Feversmile, having some success with this he was never full satisfied with the sound of his music, and always searching for more. There was also other musical influences that drove him, one was the no wave movement bands like Sonic Youth, that would take electric instruments, alternative tuning and used them to make controlled noise into make music. Another was hiphop, from the beginning stereotypical exposure through the Beastie Boys, moving to Run DMC, NWA, Dr. Dre. The wall of noise ideas, and heavy sampled hiphop backing tracks started to converge to his love for electronic music.
By 1996, Jakub was exposed to the rave scene head on and not just the electronic music scene. That first single rave experience changed his life forever, it was very intriguing for him to see people come together like that, much unlike the rock scene which seemed filled with hate and sorrow. He was amazed by the unity and the vibe that went along with the music and the idea that we can all be happy, no matter who you are or where you come from. The hiphop sample influences and synth sounds he already listening to, gave him continual inspiration to dance every weekend for nights at a time. But the heavy partying took its toll like it does for most people in the rave scene. Jakub, realized that he simply couldn't continue going to raves every single weekend and doing the same thing. At the same time the music and the scene became such a central part of his life that he still wanted part of the scene that he loves so much.
At this time his love for sharing music stepped in, as pick up his first set of turntables. Starting on a crappy gemni setup, he didn't want to be another nameless dj that train wrecked everything; his favorite djs from his warehouse dancing days became his inspiration, the sounds of Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, and locals heros like Donald Glaude. He practiced every single day sometimes in excess of 4 to 6 hours for a sold year before even trying to play out. Soon his practice paid off as he was getting lots of bookings for more and more gigs, eventually gaining club residencies, even out of state gigs. Playing in the clubs did have its ups and downs. It definitely gave Jakub more stylistic diversity by driving him to playing funky house and learning to work the dance floor and music progression, but at the same time was limiting because he was unable to play the harder music he loved. His first large rave experience was playing at an outdoor massive called Water, on the Bellingham Beats and Breaks stage as the sun was rising in the background. His ability to work the decks was well recognized and soon he played more and more events put on by some of the best crews in Seattle. He also managed to win various up and coming dj contests on local radio stations including Seattle's C98. He appeared on reguarly on Western Washington University stations radio show, and had other guest apprances on stations includeing Vancouver BC, and Auburn's . He also started promoting nights at a local clubs, helping to work on det8or shows which included regional, national and internal talent, from Donald Glaude to Perfect Combination.
Around summer 2001 Jakub stepped back and analyzed what he was doing musically. The pressures from playing in clubs forced him to play mostly filtered disco house. He wasn’t really happy with his style of music, mostly because it brought him very little challenge and didn't allow him to learn anything new, 'what is the point of playing if every record that comes out sounds the same'. He than tried his turns at playing breaks, and uk garage, musically he liked this more than house but still he was looking for something else. It was than here that he picked up and started playing few of the records he started buying when first started playing and realized that he needed to move back to techno. Jakub quickly picked up the third turntable, and went back to the music that originally drove him to dance all night. Techno is the ultimate combination of styles, this diversity is one of the reason why Jakub loves techno so much. Techno can be funky, techno can be tribal, techno can be housey, techno can be progressive and techno can be banging. With that in mind Jakub's sets normally very a lot on the setting of the performance, and the mood.
In 2002 Jakub teamed up with Justin (JLova a fellow techno head) and tried his hands at promotion throwing large scale events in Seattle, this was a short lived idea. Although successful before in promoting clubs nights, promoting raves was ultimately something that he didn't want to do. 'It is funny, throwing parties seems like such a good idea when you start, but when it comes down to it, you really need to think twice. I've lost my ass on parties numerous times, I've had headliners skip out of me at the last minute, I've had headliners being late, all this after slaving, pretending to love hanging out every night at god knows what hour flyering and all people really see is the end product and not the hard work behind. They feel cheated and so do the promoters, I command people that can successful pull it all off, it is way harder than it looks, it just wasn't for me'.
With the dissolve of the promotion business, Jakub kept a busy DJ schedule continuing to play large and small scale events in US and Canada. In 2004 Jakub had an opportunity to play one of the biggest events of the year the San Francisco Love Parade, which was a great honor for him not only because of the event size but also because he was on the only float that showcased techno as a style. In 2005, he held a short lived techno residency, and promoted a night called Adults Only with fellow techno djs Jimmy Hoffa, and Delerium. 2005 was also the year that Jakub joined Tytan Artist management roster, gaining even more exposure. Currently Jakub is keeping himself busy in the studio, and is now focused on not only playing music but making it. His first release will be a remix out in late 2005 on the legandary NYC's Gotham Grooves label.
Jakub rocks the floors where ever he ends up, always keeping to his unique roots. It’s a far cry from the kid dancing in the middle of a warehouse back in 1996, but the most important thing is he is part of something that he loves.
