Biography of Solar and Ison
ISON
DJ, music producer, event- coordinator are some of the activities held by Ison. To him music is a means of expressing his freedom as he is leaves his records to speak for him. ' To me each activity expresses a side of me... '
Born in Kavala/Greece in 1978 Ison became involved with music at the age of 10 thanks to his uncle who was a Dj at that time.' I just asked him to play at his studio and he agreed even though he knew that some of his records they could end up destroyed.' This was a period of learning and observing for him, listening to the sounds of Kraftwerk, Devo, DAF, Depeche Mode, Model 500 and others. 'I couldn't say that I was quite understanding the music in the beginning, it just made me move my body, and think... ' He soon started buying records of his own trying to mix them at home with an automatic turntable and a cassette player.
At the age of 14 he started a radio show at a local pirate station playing everything from early acid house to techno and ambient sounds. Along with friends he also started playing at house parties...'It was so funny' he reveals,' we were a bunch of people moving the turntables to each house just dancing for hours.
In 1996 Ison moved to UK in order to study Finance. There he organizes local parties with great success. This led him to play in various events mainly in London & Brighton such as the Brown's, the Cosmos parties, The Vault, The Wedgewood rooms alongside artists such as Tom Middleton, Billy Nasty, Indigo Kennedy, Steve Bicknell and others.
In 2000 Ison moved to Denmark in order to continue his studies. Obsessed by the German sound he starts visiting Hamburg and Berlin on a weekly basis; 'I was buying so many records, going out at WMF, Tresor, Maria, Ostgut listening to all these perfect artists, it was simply something unbelievable.' he says.
In 2001 after graduating, Ison decides to return to Greece in order to focus more on the local scene. ' To me being part in a developed scene is something very important, but developing a scene is perhaps more important' he states. As a result he and his close friend DJ Solar, launch a series of events at the ArtHouse club in Thessaloniki. At the same time, they produce 'sounds' as he prefers to call them under the name Elektronom. Also, the Mix series ' Sound of the future' circulate widely, resulting into guest appearances across the country.
In 2002 with the reformation of NON, Ison holds residencies in Thessaloniki, Kavala, and Halkidiki with great success. At the same time he starts playing also abroad with appearances in UK, Denmark and Germany at the Popkomm festival.
This period finds him being resident at NON_Aesthetics and NON_Kontakt in Thessaloniki. Having played so far at almost all-important venues of the domain, he is proved to be one of the most rising talents capable of creating something literally out of -so called- nothing. Past and present, trends and thoughts are all mixed together and reveal an atmosphere formed by miscellaneous elements, which, shape Ison's unique and uncompromising stand of moving always one step forward.
His mixing does not derive from a certain genre.' I enjoy to play what I really like, records that sound good to my ear... it can be house, electro, minimal, techno, simply everything! ' He has played so far with artists such as Miss Kittin, The Hacker, Tiga, Richie Hawtin, Vitalic, Juan Atkins, Steve Bug, Ellen Allien, Monika Kruse, Electric Indigo, Acid Maria, DJ Naughty, Zombie Nation, Michael Mayer, Justin Robertson, Sonja Moonear, and others.
