Biography of Makaton
London-based techno producer Makaton, aka Steven Bailey, is the man behind one of the UK's finest underground techno labels, Rodz Konez. Steven started the label in 1999 as a way of getting his music released and since then has released over 20 tracks alongside EP's from many equally respected techno producers. Makaton recently released his debut Animal Worship to widespread acclaim from around the UK and across Europe. Makaton's exhilarating live set has seen him play many of Europe's top techno clubs.
Excerpts from a Beatfreax interview:
What is the reason for you to do live sets instead of DJ'ing?
'For me it is the best way to represent the Rodz-Konez sound. I have got no great interest for DJing. I do not have an ego for that.'
What equipment do you use during your live gigs and how much do you prefab for performance?
'Nowadays I use a laptop and midi-controller. I used to use more equipment but after it was smashed up at an airport I decided only to use a laptop and midi-controller. It is no limitation for me because it depends on how you use it and the possibilities are infinite. It forces you to a different way of approaching and every ten years a new format of producing sound is introduced, so you will have to go on producing new sound bites and noises to stay innovative.'
Why did you choose the alias?
'It is my way to communicate with people without using words.'
Who is Steve Bailey, the person behind Makaton?
'Err.'
Why do you make music and what is the message that you want to spread out (if there is any)?
'I try to push the scene forward: lots of people rely on existing formulas for making music which is easy to do and not interesting at all. The purpose of techno and music is to push forward. Music has to be innovating. Sonic Youth for example, an American punk band is always surprising and inspires me.'
What are the musical sources that inspire you and who are your heroes?
'Krautrock music, Cluster, Brian Eno, Klaus Scultze, Coil, White House, Paul 'Damage' Bailey, Fugazi, Throbbing Gristle.'
