Biography of Vladislav Delay

A Helsinki producer whose 'clicks + cuts' style of ambience makes for easy comparison to countrymates Pan sonic, Vladislav Delay has recorded excellent work for three of Europe's most challenging electronic labels: Chain Reaction, Mille Plateaux, and Thomas Brinkmann's Max.Ernst. He grew up trained in jazz and still counts Philly Joe Jones — the fiery drummer for the first Miles Davis Quintet — one of his prime influences. Also before entering the world of electronics, Delay took side trips through the music of the globe (Brazilian, Cuban, African). After a few failed experiments with fusing electronics in a band environment, he began producing on his own and grew to love the mid-'90s developments by German labels Chain Reaction, A-Musik, Mille Plateaux, and others. After a series of experimentations during 1996-1997 (later released, as by Conoco, on the Kemikoski full-length), his first release was The Kind of Blue EP, released in 1998 for the Finnish label Huume. During 1999, Delay released singles on Max.Ernst and Chain Reaction, leading to his album debut, Ele, on the Australian label Sigma Editions. In early 2000, two more full-lengths followed; first, Chain Reaction released Multila, then Entain appeared on Mille Plateaux. Before the end of the year, Delay had debuted a housier incarnation, Luomo, with the Vocalcity LP for Forcetracks. Anima was issued a year later.

Comment: Beautiful miminal set by V. Delay, maybe not as mimimal as in his albums. Relaxing, complex, and beautiful.

Comment: Good minimal business from Delay. Quite a subdued set that is perfect for home listening although I’m surprised that no one has picked up on the annoying crackling sound in the right channel.

Comment: this set is darker + more brooding than others that i've heard, but good nonetheless. one of his most well known tracks, d. kompiila, makes a welcome appearance.

Comment: Luomo's really incredibly great, and this liveset is even better than the albums. For those who don't know, he writes SONGS. The man brings together ambient, dub, house, and experimental techno and then completely transcends them all. Words can't do this justice--it's THAT good.

Comment: clicks and cuts, yes.. difficult to describe if you haven't heard its type before. beautiful ambient noise, with somewhat of a building at the end. Music for thought.

Comment: I love Vladislav Delay. This set is no exception. Marvelous. I was a bit distracted by some distortion in the recording, tried to convince my ears that it was simply part of the texture, but cant get past the fact that it is simply overloading of the preamps. Still totally worth it.

Comment: yup, the sound is pretty bad, a pity b/c this could have been my set of the Quarter. unfortunately besides the (unintended) distortion there are also sections that are very quiet or silent, enough that i wonder whether they were intended. amazing rendition (not an extreme rendition :P) of Delay classics and some found sound/song cutlets with the usual hybrid suspense (will this be more like social selection? prostitute? one's groove?). def worth a listen, worth keepin all the same.

Comment: The sound quality really takes away from the mix, but from what I can hear it sounds quite good

Comment: I just want to say WOW!!! This is an incredible set!!! It's one of the most trippy and blissful that I've ever heard. It begins with sweet and smooth sounds, then moves onto some incredible IDM tracks. I think that the beautiful minimalism of this man's complex mixing is really chill.
