Biography of .spec aka Rob Gretton

First pulling together a mix at a New Year party in 1996/7, the die was cast in terms of my open minded approach to DJing. If memory serves, those tracks were T.Power’s ‘Symbiosis’ (or its flipside?) and ‘A Thousand Ways’ by Cabaret Voltaire. The party ebbed and flowed over the next 4 days or so, but on the rare occasions I’d manage to get near the decks nothing would come together.

Late ’97 saw me move to London, be introduced to Techno in its purest forms and soon after the music which really inspired me… a combination of Industrial beats, analogue synths and precision programming. Electronica (or latterly IDM) was the name it was given, but to me was always just interesting Electro.

A few years on, I joined Outlet Collective, a crew of fellow old Southenders and London Lost regulars. Though most noted for my ‘In-a-bar-style’ House sets which would always get the room subconsciously moving at our weekly jaunts to Bar Spirit, Barbican, I was beginning to tire of 4-to-the-floor and wanted to get back to ‘interesting Electro’. After a string of backroom sets at SEND, OC’s events at The Rhythm Factory, Whitechapel, and supporting Rob Euroh at Bleep43 parties, I knew it was time to part with the crew and pursue my own direction.

Since heading off on my own, I've moved back to my home town and concentrated on building up and learning the ins and outs of my studio. Recently making my début live performance at the Sutton with Shopland Festival (swsf.co.uk), I'm now solidly on a 'play live' mission. Outside of that I'm in the process of forming a Southend-on-Sea Electronic Arts Network (SOSEAN or Mesh), working with local grafitti artists in co-ordination with Network Rail and Southend Borough Council, and also involved in several multimedia projects with MediaShed (mediashed.org). I also co-run ambient/electronica night Telephasic Workshop, with Paul Malone (DJ Wes Cliff) and Stuart Bowditch (Hybernation) in what some folks consider to be a going-nowhere seaside town. Home is what you make it. We’re making it better!
