Biography of The Autobots

Tom and Jez, collectively known as nu-skool breaks producers The Autobots, are still reeling from the plaudits, after the successful launch of their new record label Broke. Showcasing their own material and including fresh cuts from co label owner Deep Impact as well as providing a platform for developing acts like The Breakfastaz, Control Z, Screwface and Far Too Loud, the response towards Broke has been overwhelming.

Current projects include a return to breakbeat for the ex-Freestylers MC, Navigator, for the first time since the mammoth 'We Rock Hard' LP. Gleaning regular support from The Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts and Stanton Warriors amongst others, the Label has featured on dozens of Radio stations worldwide, including regular plays on BBC Radio1 (Zane Lowe, Annie Nightingale, etc.) as well as countless plays on internet radio stations.

The Autobots have played many UK gigs in the past couple of years, including Raindance, Fuse (where they are now residents), Beatworx, Bandwidth, D-Tuned, Crash Position, Sumo & Kingpin. They also made appearances at Reading and Guildford festivals in 2003, and Glastonbury in 2004. This summer will see them playing at many more festivals including Glade & V in the UK, Cosmic Trip in the Czech Republic, and some key, major Spanish fiestas.

Abroad, they have played in Japan, Spain (over 20 times in the past 18 months including to 10,000 people at the Esparrago festival) and have completed five successful tours of the of the U.S.A. (the most recent of which was sponsored by Camel) They have also notched up regular appearances at the WMC in Miami, in both 2004 & 2005. These regular international excursions have helped to extended The Autobots global appeal and the duo is subsequently attracting interest from all quarters.

Working alongside a number of industry heavyweights, including American metal band Fear Factory, The Autobots are bridging gaps between genres and they strive to provide a unique energy and quality in both their music production and DJing. These more metal/breaks orientated tracks will also feature their new vocalist Teri, from punk band 'Mary Jane'. Teri also features on a track they have produced in collaboration with breakbeat stalwarts Aquasky, which will feature on Aquaskys 'Team Players' LP to be released on Passenger early next year.

The Autobots also have a full live show in development, which should hit the road in 2006. Aside from the Autobots, Tom also moonlights as Bez's (Happy Mondays) DJ partner, and regularly gigs worldwide with the freaky dancer. The boys are going to be recording an Autobots track with Bez and Sean Ryder later in the year.

Comment: Absolutely quality first half of this set. If you love tear out breaks then you will love this. Loads of reggae vocals which seem to be the flavour of the moment in the UK. Reckon anyone who likes this will love stuff the breakfastaz (not sure I spelt that right!) do. Only complaint would be the level of crown noise. I don't mind a bit of crowd noise normally, it adds atmosphere to a recorded mix but at times on this mix it is way too much.

Comment: Killer mix of a huge variety of breaks. The sound quality is crisp and clear with some minor crackling sounds here and there. The audience is going nuts during most of the set which is nice to hear. After hearing this I desperately want to see them live.
