Biography of The Kooky Scientist
The Kooky Scientist aka Fred Giannelli, has been experimenting in his Boston laboratory under this moniker of sound for the last few years. 'Unpopular Science' shows that 'there’s no point in making techno all hard and unpleasant to the ear.' The Kooky Scientist sound’s seem like they came from equipment made in another galaxy, beaming up whatever the controller programs to light. Once in focus, it’s easy to get caught in the simple yet complex grooves of the tracks. Then you realize that there are no Earthly comparisons to what you’re hearing. Quirky and catchy describe this work of true electronic pop music.
'Unpopular Science' taps you into a musician’s mind that has seen electronic dance music rise, fall and rise again. From recording with the experimental camp Psychic TV in the mid-Eighties, to running his own label, Telepathic Recordings, Fred has witnessed the full-spectrum of the music business. He knows how the rock-orientated industry looks at this music. 'It’s not real music to them, it’s just there to make people dance. The song tradition has got such a stranglehold on what the US perceives as music. Dance music is still an underground thing.'
Energetically, Giannelli is very definable about his music. 'It’s an electronic dance music record, a good entry point for people who are semi-interested in techno, who are like, 'What should I get on CD?' The Kooky Scientist has been performing this sound live, ever-effectively throughout North America since autumn 1995, commanding audiences to 'surrender to the beat.'
Listening to electronic and experimental music since his youth, Fred has spent nearly 20 years tuning into the sound of tomorrow. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of his picking-up the guitar. In his Italian-flavored Bostonian accent, 'What we’re doing, techno, is artistic, but isn’t art. Like with my first Telepathic release, I wanted the first record I put out to be a weird record that just appeared: I wanted to see if it would sell on it’s own terms. The weirder ones are the artistic ones.'
Giannelli is an eccentric individual, and with due cause. His life is surrounded by this music. He makes weird, obscure and often harsh records. He’s produces some of his own custom-designed gear and effect processors, while modifying and adapting 'manufactured' equipment to further express his creativity. He is a 'future musician' exactly to the point.
