Biography of Minilogue

ebastian Mullaert and Marcus Henriksson came from opposing backgrounds. Sebastian was trained as a classical musician playing the organ, piano and the violin among other instruments. He even became involved in teaching them until his coming of age at 18 when he formed a band and began experimenting with the sounds in a more contemporary way. Marcus lived on a diet of Kraftwerk and the Front 242 until realising his true calling in the techno parties of the 90s. Through promoting parties he moved on to become one of the bigger DJs in Southern Sweden. It was in a party where they met and decided to combine Sebastian’s musician’s perspective and knowledge with Marcus´ DJ skills and experience from the scene. They got together in 1996 and after 10 years in the music business under successful guises such as Son Kite and Trimatic, Marcus & Sebastian are now Minilogue - an animalistic music concept without the boundaries of genres. They hail from Malmoe, a small town in the south of Sweden with a population of less than 1/4 million, an unlikely setting for such underground and innovative project. Through the years their music has expanded and moved through a variety of sounds appealing across the board of electronic music.

Their recent material touches on influences from a simplistic early 90s sound of electronica, filled with apocalyptic climaxes, warped and wondrous sounds creating textures with true depth and portraying a true sense of the duo’s vision. They make music that is built for peak-time dance floors as well as laid-back listening, producing a sound that is industrial, vivid and continually provocative, and offering a reminder of the fundamental beauty and intricacy of true techno. Minilogue’s music is playful, ambitious, simple and melancholic. Often referred to as way ahead of their time, this year looks set o carve out some well-deserved success for the eccentric Scandinavians with eleases out already on Traum, Audiobahn, and Crosstown Rebels. They have received strong international press attention with features in Trax, Debug and Raveline and support from a huge range of DJs including James Holden an appearance on Sasha’s compilation. Boasting a forthcoming release on Wagon Repair and an album, “Animals” completed and ready to drop in 2007 Minilogue are definitely an act you will be hearing a great deal more from.

Comment: This set is incredible. It sounds so fresh compared to so many others. They build the energy perfectly, keeping it interesting throughout. A particular highlight is the Massive Attack remix. Beautiful track. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would love to hear more from this duo. The only complaint I have is the occasional crowd noise you can hear. This is a small complaint though, as it does not really take away too much from this outstanding set.

Comment: The sounds are original and fresh but not really that energetic. This is more a set to listen to when you are laid back in the couch relaxing. The quality of the sound is not that great, but not really an issue for me.

Comment: Firstly, Minilogue, suffice it to say, have an ear for their craft. The beats are soft and the melodies are strong but never too aggressive. Being that the set was played at Panorama Bar, I'm sure it was a shining performance for a glowing Minimal crowd. The environment is definitely a plus for any DJ and there are a lot of nice build ups.

The Elephant's Parade and The Leopard are two great tracks played near the end. The beginning of the set is a little disco minimal in a similar context to the Daft Punk sound.
