Biography of The Mooncakes Project

THE MOONCAKES PROJECT (DJ Schwitters + Jeoffrey Vigneron)

DJ Schwitters derives inspiration from such diverse musical styles as Dub, Breakbeat, Rock’n’roll, Blues and Soul. He has a special attraction to label works, whilst using radical and immediate approaches like Anticon, Def jux Records, Asphodel, Grand Central and Ninja Tune.

How does this impact upon his creations? DJ Schwitters is obviously influenced by renowned experimentalists-Kid Koala, Christian Marclay and Steinski to name a few. However his music equally reflects his absorbtion of the works of artists emphasizing “recycling” and “joining” techniques, artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jean-Michel Basquiat and of course Kurt Schwitters himself.

Presently, DJ Schwitters’ objectives lie in the music, and the enjoyment derived from being able to share his singular perspective with a wider audience. He is renowned for his exploration of different musical sources. Working through a variety of INOFFENSIVE?????!!!, borrowed styles to good effect, he is constantly tweaking and refining music, avoiding getting bogged down in any one style. His primary concern: to find coherence in diversity. For The Mooncakes Project, DJ Schwitters uses turntables, a groovebox, a keyboard and a sampler.

Jeoffrey Vigneron is a guitarist and composer. His guitar playing blends modern jazz, alternative and experimental music, and world music traditions such as Latin into an approach that is uniquely his, encompassing improvisation, enigmatic textures and the dynamism of Funk.

His influences are Chet Baker, Sixun, L2W, Traore, Red Snapper, Miles Davis, RJD2, Coltrane, Truffaz, Amon Tobin and Sinsemilia.

Originally from Charleroi, Jeoffrey picked up his first guitar at the age of 14 in order to play Rock music, but with Masimo’s help-his teacher and close friend-he soon began to refine his playing, dropping the emphasis on funk-rock techniques for a hard-swinging but cleaner sound.

During his law studies, Jeoffrey concentrated on the more jazz-orientated aspects of his sound. Soon he was gigging in Brussels, playing in a jazz combo “blue up”, whose style ranged from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. Jeoffrey’s adventurous style has been showcased in long standing gigs at the Music Village (Brussels).

For the past few years, in addition to his other facets, Jeoffrey has been tinkering again- rediscovering Funk and Groove mixes, and working towards intertwining the diverse strands of his passions. For The Mooncakes Project, Jeoffrey is using an semi-accoustic guitar, wha-wha, a moogerfogger and a line 6 pod to weave live atmosphere and velvety chords into DJ Schwitters’ music.
