Biography of Flevans

FLEVANS

Since birth, Flevans has been making noise; some good, some bad. At the tender age of 9, he was encouranged to learn the piano, and not long after was learning the Double Bass. Progressing into high school, he picked up the bass guitar, and spent several years playing bass in funk and jazz bands.

By the end of his school years, Flevans took off for London to play lead guitar, rather foolishly in retrospect, in a rock band called Zen. Surviving on the dole and playing psychedelic 60's rock covers could only be managed for a year, before Flevans fled to North London for university.

During those 3 years, Flevans spent much time recording demos on a cassette 4-track, taking short snippets of funk and jazz tunes with a basic 10 second sampler, and laying them precariously down, loop by loop onto the 4 track. After uni, Flevans headed down to Brighton and, just to test the waters, sent off a few of the rough demos to some local labels. As if by freaky magic, a call from Tru Thoughts came only a couple weeks later.

So Flevans found himself signed, without a computer, a proper sampler or any working instruments.

The following two years saw two Flevans releases, the chilled and funky Begin Again EP and the dancefloor rocking Looking Out For Mr Bundle EP, both of which received great praise from the likes of Kid Loco (who featured Flevans Spooked on his Another Late Night compilation), Aim, Groove Armada and Radio 1s Steve Lamacq. Flevans most recent single and compilation CD, Make New Friends looks set to keep things going in the same direction, and should keep people happy until the album finally drops.

So right now, away from completing remixes for the likes of Dr Rubberfunk and Nylon Rhythm Machine, Flevans is locked away in the studio, putting the finishing touches to his album, which features contributions from Sweet Laredo (who have recently worked with Jon Kennedy of Grand Central fame), Dr Syntax (a fantastic Brighton MC who has recently appeared on Tom Caruana's new single on Breakin Bread), JFB (an incredible turntablist and DJ), Backini (whose debut album on Lumennesence, Threads, should be in everyones record collection) and Johnny Tarr (who has contributed Sax to several tracks, and who has recently worked with Black Grass and Backini amongst others) and hopefully his new material should be appearing by mid-2005!
