Biography of Sam Mcewin
Since purchasing his first 1200 in late 1999 Sam McEwin has very quickly emerged as one of Melbourne's true talents. Finishing high school in 2000 Sam dropped out of University at age 19 and landed his dream job managing an outer suburban record store called 'Dance Arena'. Gaining crucial exposure to the Melbourne scene it was through his Dance Arena connections that Sam scored his first residency at the weekly house night Confusion. Although the night was short lived the experience would prove vital in Sam's development as a DJ. In 2002 while promoting for Melbourne club night 'Fokus', Sam, together with close friend's Matt Radovich, Peter Baker, Craig McWhinney and Jay Reading laid the groundwork for what has now become the Melbourne Techno Collective.
Earning recognition for his endless hard work and dedication to the Melbourne scene Sam has worked tirelessly to push techno in Melbourne. As part of the MTC Sam has always looked to nurture up and coming DJ's, while at the same time honing his own immaculate skills. Sam's passion to succeed has lead to his involvement with numerous club nights throughout his career including weekly techno night Jack the Basics, Pantytek, Niche as well as numerous Melbourne techno Collective events.
As a DJ Sam's is known best for his chunky, driving dancefloor friendly techno. A self confessed sucker for Latin rhythms there is always a strong tribal element to nearly everything he plays. Equally as skilled on three decks as he is on two Sam's ability to capture a dance floor has seen him play support roles for the likes of Technasia, Ben Sims, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Steve Rachmad, Deetron, Joris Voorn, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, Cave, Justin Berkovi, Stewert Walker and Adam Jay. Not to mention some of the biggest events in Australia such as Two Tribes, Sunshine People and the Earthcore Festival. Taking the majority of his influences from the local Melbourne scene Sam has drawn much inspiration from DJ's such as Mike Callander, Ben Cromack, Will E Tell and most notably from his MTC co residents. However Sam has also drawn inspiration from the sounds of international DJ's and producers such as Ben Sims, Mark Broom, Sam Geiser (Deetron), Jeff Mills and Samuel L Session.
