Biography of Adam Freeland

Like James Lavelle of Mo' Wax Records, Freeland rose to prominence as a dance music wünderkind, becoming a highly successful, DJ, remixer, club promoter and record label boss while still in his early twenties. In 1998, the UK's DJ magazine's reader's poll of the world's Top 100 DJs ranked him at number 34. Originally a deep house DJ, Freeland became known for seamlessly blending hip-hop and electro into his sets. He pioneered 'nu-school breaks' - breakbeats with an eclectic range of influences including techno, drum 'n' bass and world music. Although DJing on the London club scene from 1992, his first mix compilation, Coastal Breaks, was not released until 1996. A double CD comprising 32 tracks, it received high praise from the critics and raised Freeland's profile, enabling him to tour in the UK and the USA. He won the admiration of many respected UK DJs such as Carl Cox, Sasha, the Chemical Brothers and Andy Weatherall. He supported Cox on several dates of his F.A.C.T. 2 world tour.

In 1997, he ran a successful night, 'Friction', in Soho, London with DJ friends, Rennie Pilgrem and Tayo. In that year, he also released a single with his friend Kevin Beber, 'Number 43 With Steamed Rice Please' under the name Tsunami One. The popularity of the track in the clubs led to remix work for the Orb, DeeJay Punk-Roc, Headrillaz and Orbital. Freeland began 1998 by touring Australia with DJ Krush, Pressure Drop and José Padilla. Coastal Breaks 2 was released and was a critical and commercial success. With his determination to innovate and experiment, the master of 'nu-school breaks' is being tipped by many dance journalists as the next DJ superstar.

Comment: One of my favorite sets ever. I started downloading it about 2 years ago on kazaa but only got 97% before dude stopped accessing kazaa. Now I finally get to finish it. The first track has this amzing saul williams voice sample about the american govt. using the people to in a way destroy other countries outlook on us. Adam Freeland is a very political dj using his music to convey a messege. If only more electronic musicians would realize the power this music has to reach out to people and educate. This set he also takes a Rage Against the Machine track and mixes it in which when I first heard it, I thought that was so amazing. This was the set that brought me to this site and now I can't wait to see what this site really can offer to the underexposed djs and producers out there.

Comment: Its an okay set. Its produced for Radio 1 so is an oppurtunity to be self-indulgent and it is. Some really good breaks to start, meanders into rock and various bits of noodling halfway through, then filters out nicely towards the end. Like a soundtrack to a particularly strange evening out. I need to check out his live sets...

Comment: One of the best Freeland sets I've heard so far. Is the date really correct? It sounds newer, but I may be wrong.

Comment: Quite good! A couple of duds, but overall a fresh slap in the face to American cowboyism.

Comment: Whoa, I absolutely love this set. It is relaxed and chilling but kicking at the same time, so you can relax or go crazy on the dancefloor. Perfect party sound. This is a reference for the breaks genre I think. Great collage of bits and pieces from all different kinds of music blended perfecly together under the preference of being danceable. Nice.

Comment: Classic Freeland. One of my favorite sets ever. You've gotta love the Rage slammed in the middle of the set. Freeland is the master of mixing hip hop and rock into a killer breaks set. This is the set that got me truly interested in breakbeat and electronic music in general. I've played this set for people that "hate techno" and they've found themselves with a new respect for electronic music. This is a must download.

Comment: This is exactly what you wanna hear when you listen to a mixset. Adam takes great tracks, including his own productions and remixes, and blends them seamlessly into an innovative and moving set. There is rock, hip-hop, house, and acid woven stylistically into breaks. I am a little more into the Thump Rock mix right now, but this is unquestionably freakin' awesome. Thumbs way up.

Comment: This is a great set from back then! It's fully recommended to anyone who loves Breakbeat and a few eclectic tracks in there too, which are perfectly mixed I might add. ;) I first heard this on BBC Radio 1 and recorded it onto tape, I know, how old skool, but then I didn't know how to or even had a fast enough connection to record it. I kept meaning to convert to digital format later but got too busy. But now I don't need to wheyhey. Thanks Lotto, much respectos ;)

...and thanks Adam, great set :)
