Biography of Andy Smith

Andy Smith is the originator of the major-label multi-genre mix album. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut's Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more - The Document and its follow up Document II filled the void.

The Document III
Having sold in excess of 130,000 copies of The Document I and II, Andy has now released the eagerly anticipated The Document III on Sanctuary Records. The mix features artists as diverse as Muddy Waters, Freda Payne, Showbiz and AG, Black Sabbath and Aldo Vanucci.

It reflects Smith's well honed DJ style of playing good music whatever the genre from his mixed bag of vinyl treasures. This style also forms the bedrock of his weekly DJ sets around the world and recently wowed audiences at festivals such as Glastonbury and The Big Chill.

Portishead
This appreciation of different genres made Smith the ideal guy to provide sample material for Portishead. He made his name as the band's world tour DJ reflecting their respect for both the art of digging for breaks and hip-hop scratch DJing. These hip-hop elements formed the basis of the unique Portishead sound.

Dynamo Productions
Since touring Smith has established himself as an underground producer of some of the most irresistible hip-hop breaks-based music around, working with Scott Hendy (Boca 45) under the name Dynamo Productions. Their album Analogue, which received five out of five in Mojo magazine, featured San Diego-based MC Profile from the much respected Sound Providers crew.

Djing
Smith regularly appears in clubs across the world, with residencies in London, Dublin and Switzerland. His strong cult following has lead to him playing in places as far flung as Australia, South America and Japan!

Comment: Part 2 has some decent hip-hip although I'm not an expert or a real fan, but the quality is there. More funk, soul and trip hop. All in all it is a good mix, I say that inpartially. Its just not really my taste at the moment.

Comment: shame the mp3 is such poor quality - even though 128kbps, sounds more like 56! The mix itself is great, with some fantastic tracks, but why bother downloading something that sounds naff?!?!

Comment: Again the same comments as the first half of this mix. Some good tunes and great mixing, but I definitely preferred the coldcut mix to this one. If you are really into your hip hop though you will love this set.
