Biography of Marcus Watkins

Marcus Watkins

Detroit, MI USA

Born in 1977 in Chicago, IL USA, Marcus Watkins formed the infamous Soulmates crew back in the 1990's, and now runs and coordinates Random Access Recordings. Marcus has made a major impact on electronic dance music (particularly house) in the 'midwest' scene in the United States. This is by no means describing him as a local because he has consistently played in front of crowds well through out the USA and Europe. This includes: international tours throughout Canada as well as spinning in the UK and Glasgow, Scotland. Marcus Started DJing at the early tender age of 13. Marcus has deep roots in electronic dance music. He became interested in DJing mainly because of his cousins the late Armando Gallop and Frank'Lust'Johnson. They taught Marcus the history of house music and made him aware of some struggles they had experience early on, which has helped him to understand and appreciate the evolution of the music. One of the things that concerns Marcus the most is how people don't take the time to get to understand and appreciate the history of music. Marcus believes, 'a person can't know where they are going if they don't know where they came from.' If some people only knew how hard it was for those promoters, DJs, and producers back in the day. They have paved the way and now that things are so commercial, it is much easier because the music is accepted internationally. People in the scene today should tip thier hats those who have got us to where we are today. Today's generation must continue to strive to take it even further. Marcus has a burning passion for his art form and you can definitely see it and feel it when he spins. Growing up in Chicago definitely has had its perks; Marcus has had some great mentors, teachers, & friends including: Armando Gallop, Traxx, Mike Dunn, Stacy Kidd, Paul Johnson, Glenn Underground, Brian Harden, John 'BID' Simmons, Justin Long, OSCAR, DJ JES, JES ONE, Melvin Meeks, DJ Chip, Daryl Cura, Craig Alexander, Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Farly 'Jackmaster' Funk, Glenn Underground, Boo Williams, Mazi, Frankie Vega, and many more. After graduated with his BA in broadcast journalism, from Columbia College Chicago, Marcus moved to the greater Detroit area where his wife is from. Always forward thinking, Marcus now concentrates more on music production. As he sees technology moving at such a pace that it allows even the 'average joe' to take advantage of the opportunity to make professional recordings. Also, with the internet being so popular, it has opended up endless possiblities. To be honest, the whole computer revolution plays right up Marcus's alley, because he has been using them since the old DOS days and has continued to used them on a everyday basis, so he is very comfortable using them to make music. Marcus still makes occasional DJ appearances but not on a weekly basis anymore because now he has a family and dedicates most of his time being a father and a husband. Random Access Recordings is a great way for Marcus to continue to do his part in preserving the integrity and quality of electronic dance music. Marcus would like to thank those that have supported him in the past and continue to support him now. May God Bless us all!!!

Comment: Its a nice mix with some vocal and jazza elements. The file quality is seriously crap though - 64kbps, 22KHz.

Comment: This set is your typical chicago style house mix. Has some funky upbeat jackin beats and some RnB influenced tracks... I havent seen or heard marcus in about 4 or 5 yrs so it was interesting.
