Biography of A. Paul
A.Paul started his career in the late 80īs, as a natural development of the taste for dance rhythms. Connected to disco-sound and funk since an early age, was with the boom of acid house that he faced the possibility of working seriously on what was already more than a simple passion.
Like a lot of Portuguese and foreign djs, he started to promote small parties with his own equipment, followed by the first gigs on a local disco-bar.
Entering the 90īs, he was invited to play in a 1000 capacity club, where he stayed for about one year, playing a wide range of musical styles to a big crowd. During this period, Portuguese dance music had its first steps, and A.Paul tried to create his own style, although house, trance & techno weren't so distant as they are nowadays.
By the end of 93, he got himself in the middle of a new world, working in Question of Time record shop, working with J.Daniel whom with he also released his first twelve inch, that became a milestone on his career, so unexpected was the worldwide feedback to it. This is the same year when he becomes resident dj at the mythical club called Climacz, in Lisbon.
In 1995, already responsible for the techno imports department at Illegal shop, he opts to create a record label - Squeeze Records, along with Portuguese djs Ferro and Wogz, gathering the best Portuguese artists, and keeping always an innovator charisma, fully dedicated to techno rhythms.
In 1996, and despite he had already an established free lancer dj 'way of life' (working with the best national promoters, organizations and labels, as Kaos, releasing also a few records for them), he his invited and accepts to be resident at Kremlin, probably the best Portuguese dance club at that time.
In 1997, he plays in a few events of X-Club, and after a while, join their agency for more than 2 years, playing with the best worldwide artists like Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Ritchie Hawtin, The Advent, Damon Wild, Robert Hood, Derrick May, Dave Clarke, Dave Angel, Luke Slater, Dj Skull, Daz Saund, Eric Powell, Trevor Rockcliffe among others. Still in 97, he decided to create another record label - Onhcet Records, receiving great compliments, both from the press and the djs, licensing tracks to Carl Cox & Takkyu Ishino for compilations in Japan, counting also with a remix by The Advent, known as one of the best techno live acts in the world. His debut album 'Neurofunk', this time on Squeeze Records, got also a big response (it was charted 5th best album on Dj Magazine - October 98).
The year of 2001 witnessed the creation of a new project - Genesis Records, starting as an online record shop, soon becoming a record label and a proper record shop in Lisbon. Also other artistic activities were developed by A.Paul in this new century, such as graphic design, web design and journalism. In 2002, A.Paul was invited by Cisco Ferreira (The Advent) to remix a track for his label Kombination Research, to be released in May, in a compilation featuring other techno artists such as Adam Beyer, Marco Carola, Damon Wild, Rino Cerrone, Steve Rachmad, Space Djz, Mark Broom, Chris Liebing, Hardcell, Player, Frank Hunter among others.
On the 4th of May, he was voted best Portuguese techno dj on the Dance Club Awards 2001, highlighting his 15 years of career.
