Biography of Lusine

Based originally out of Texas, then in Los Angeles and now in Seattle, Jeff McIlwain - aka L'Usine, Lusine Icl, and finally just Lusine - has gained a solid reputation for creating fresh, well-produced IDM and Ambient. Since 1999, his releases have earned him the respect and professional interest of increasingly well-regarded labels, from Isophlux to Hymen, and most recently the venerable Ghostly International.

Domestic electronic knob noodlers unite! If you haven't already noticed, Jeff Mcllwain is your new leader. As L'usine, Mcllwain creates insurgent IDM, providing an infinitely distinctive take on the oftstale genre. Armed with prismatic shards of processed Electro beats and nighttime Dub-infused echoes of Detroit's past, he's leading an international aural assault with a solid bounty of releases both domestic and international. Mcllwain's sights are boldly set on the future sonics he's pioneering, while acknowledging his formative musical influences.

'I used to really be into synth pop,' he says. 'Electronic; New Order, stuff like that just the really great repetitive melodic hooks. I would imitate them on the piano all the time. Born in Virginia, reared in Texas, schooled in film and music at Cal Arts in California, and now residing in Seattle. The locale, topography and climate have played an important role in the formation of the L'usine sound. 'The environment up here is great for making music,' Mcllwain explains. 'Visiting different places and landscapes has always affected how I listen to music because I can attach those experiences to it. So, in a way, I would want my music to affect people in the same way. I would just like it to be something that can last.'

Taking the influence of different places and landscapes to the fullest effect, Mcllwain is perhaps the only underground US electronic musician to boast the subversive use of one of his tracks for MTV's existential open-air odyssey Road Rules. 'I don't really like that show, but MTV sometimes uses really interesting music for their segueing stuff, so I thought, what the heck.' The emotive, cinematic sound of all Mcllwain's music lends itself particularly well to the world of moving images, and could prove the next front for his aural assault. 'I'm hoping to work on some video collaborations with artists I really respect,' he says. 'Scoring films would be great, too, if it's a project I really believed in.' In the meantime, though, the IDM massive must tide itself over with a stream of upcoming missives on Ghostly International, U-Cover and Mental Industries, or simply make friendly with the couch during a Road Rules Marathon weekend.

Comment: lusine is one of my all-time favourites + this set
will demonstrate why. it's pure languid joy wrapped
up in a bleepy, glitchy minimal package. lusine's albums,
"serial hodgepodge" + "a pseudo steady state"
have both been permanent fixtures on my ipod ever since
i got my mitts on them. his beats are so beautifully
complex + wonderfully produced that it's obvious why he's
been getting such rave reviews. i've been searching
for a live set for ages + now, thanks to mister audiostatic,
we have one here. many thanks monkey! ;)

Comment: Excellent live set there from jeff. His music oozes class morphing from fat sometimes dubby sounding 4/4 tracks to electro based electronica.

Comment: This is phenomenal work from Mr ICL (or Jeff as he is to his Mum!). Deep, minimal sounds but also with real soul and melody, and that absolutely characteristic Lusine sound and groove.

& the beats are all fairly 'blippy' but thats a plus, not a minus!

Comment: :-o This is a very good minimal techno set, glitchy as hell and full of feeling. None of the songs really made my head turn, but it did make for a good hour of musical enjoyment. If you're really into live PA's this is above average.

Comment: Having really only heard Serial Hodgepodge, I think the reason for Lusine's popularity is he is technical yet melodic, and still leaves the dance in IDM, making him the greatest hits of said genre. This set is nice if you're a Lusine fan, which I am, but I have to admit it begins to sound a bit samey after awhile. Definite potential, great transitions and nice beats, but there's just a bit of oomph missing from this set...No risks. Which is the only thing keeping this from a ten.

I still highly recommend this set to any Lusine fan, or anybody looking to see what Lusine is about. I recognize Falling In (~53:00) and The Stop (~61:00) from Serial Hodgepodge.

Sound quality is top notch, check this one out.

Comment: This is a great minimal set from Lusine. There are some funky beats on this one, and Lusine mixes this one perfectly. A few vocals have been mixed in, but the sound of the set itself is really great. I highly recommend to those who are just getting into this talented dj.

Comment: Minimal... at its best. If you like the "wet" clicky--click---pop---click... well, you'll love this. If you haven't checked out the "Push" EP... you really should. (I'm also a big fan of Inside/Out EP). Lusine is the shizz! Sound quality is great...

Comment: Top of the line! This set includes everything from dubby sounds to funk. For me this is the soundtrack of old industrial estates or abandoned oil harbours. Lusine is one of the most important artist in this genre at the moment.

Comment: This is a great opportunity for everyone to get acquainted with l'usine mainly because his live-sets are seldom to be found easily. L'usine seems at first glance to be basically simple in structure, but the whole is, yet again, more than the sum of its parts. Try it, get hooked.

Comment: Lusine....mmm... This set is fantastic, incredible, I am mad about it.

Lusine is an idm/minimal techno group, but I think this style is between the melodic sound of Autechre (olds albums like Tri Repetae), and Monolake for the bassline (not all the time because it is faster with Lusine).

This is very deep, glitchy, melodic, and rhythmic...mmm... simply the best sound.

Thanks to Lusine :)

admin note : lusine is ONE guy, jeff mcilwain, not a group. ;)

Comment: A great set for those of you unlucky enough to not have seen him live. Unlike one of the commenters above, I find this set not as good as what you see live, but then again, maybe that's the charm of live music. The set's awesome especially in the second half, with a great remix of 'Flat.'

I thought this was a set I hadn't heard before; just to clarify this is the PercussionLab set.

Comment: This is a great mix here, lots of rolling beats (from min to max) a little bit of glitch and loads of warm atmospherics. Some of the mixes are really long on this, but it's great for sticking on in the car if you have got a long drive. Anyone know what the name is of the breaks track around 36mins. This is definitely worth a download.

ADMIN NOTE : the track at 36 minutes is a version of 'slur' from lusine's album 'serial hodgepodge.'

Comment: Yea! That is a great minimal set! Very intelligent and dry beats, nice mixing and sophisticated arrangement. 66 minutes of ambient- and dub-touched bleeps and glitches, that really never gets boring. Enjoy!

Comment: I loved listening to this. Lots of attractive blips and bleeps, but the most fascinating part to me was listening to the mix over time. If I listened to a section of about one minute of the mix, it sounded very similar throughout, with only subliminal changes that you must listen intently to pick up. However, if you choose random samples five minutes apart, it's like listening to a totally different track!

Comment: Minimal may sometimes be associated with boring, but this set progressively explodes in your face. It's got some very crazy parts. A friend of mine laughed out loud when he heard it and asked "Where'd you get that?" Don't miss it!

Comment: I can only describe this as deeply stunning electronica i had not heard of this artist until day when i was just browsing by electronic and by populartity and i noticed it had such a good score i thought i would give it a try i think fans of minimal stuff like Hawtin and fans of plaid & autechre should deffinently give this one a go.

Comment: I have been listening to electronic sets lately from the likes of Monolake, Tigerskin, etc. Amongst such a background of strong live PA's this set and producer stands without parallel in the genre. His work is genius, starting with the careful crafting of each sound and ending with the transitional musical structure he has created. This is not a huge dancefloor set, but is rather a moody, atmospheric and thought-provoking one. It does have the capacity to make you move, but its goal seems to be so much more than that. It is somewhat bleepy and maybe a little glitchy, but I believe the comments describing it in this way paint an incorrect picture. The set is sweeping, tight, and lucidly electronic. Very much recommended. Sound quality is great.
