Biography of Monolake

Robert Henke, born in 1969 in Munich. I was always fascinated by technology, wanted to become an engineer. Some day I discovered Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre and I could not stop listen to it again and again. I did stupid jobs after school and finally had enough money to buy a Roland Juno-6 which allowed me to create strange electronic sound collages and I started played in a bad gothic band.

In 1990 I moved to Berlin. City of techno and of the Elektronische Studio der Technischen Universität. Computer music during daytime. Dancing at night.

I started making electronic music with Gerhard Behles and began to study sound engineering at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Potsdam Babelsberg, where I made sound installations and film soundtracks.

One of my installations lead to my first CD Piercing Music. One of the tracks of Gerhard and me was released on Chain Reaction and we named the project

m o n o l a k e

Later I started the imbalance computer music label while Gerhard founded the software company Ableton to create music software and I joined the team.

Monolake became a Robert Henke solo project with occasional support by friends, like Torsten 'T++' Pröfrock who added a new note to the sonic world of monolake on the album Polygon_Cities in 2004 and contributes to the Atlantic Waves network project.

My music is about the exploration of sound, rhythm and structure, about the interaction between a sonic event and the space in which it happens. During the years monolake got more focused on music for the dancefloor while I produce drones, electroacoustic soundscapes and media installations under my real name.

Comment: Fantastic.
My favourite electronic producer for the last few years.
Gets the balance between electronica/techno/electro/dub/industrial perfect and keeps his own very unique style.
Beautiful music.

Comment: What else can I say, Monolake tops my list of favorite projects. I was startled to find a free download. For those still questioning, there are many recognizable sections (television tower, for example) but different from album releases. Great live PA, wish I was there.

Comment: I love Monolake. That off kilter sparse futuristic sound is amazing. I can only wonder what it's like live, but this gives me an idea. I think I own all of his albums.

Comment: cool, relaxed and pushing glitchy techdub set.
for me this set is evidence, that the last 2 autechre albums had found their way to techno and monolake is the one,who uses similar sounds and structures.
recommended to everybody wanting more than a simple dj set with well known sounds....

Comment: very, very minimal and abstract. def. an interesting listen. i think that the sound quality really limits this sort of set, when a mix is this subtle i get the feeling it hasnt been done justice.

Comment: real nice spaced-out set. I didn't mind it being a live PA, I think that format works better for ambient music than it does for beat/dance-oriented techno. there is more room for whimsy and expansion.

Comment: I like Monolake very much and this liveset is fantastic. If you want to relax and dive into great atmosphere then try this. The only problem is that after 61 minutes you hear the crowd and he makes some final words but after this short break comes best track.
