Biography of Sylvain Chauveau

After several years as a rock singer and guitarist, Sylvain Chauveau stops in 1998 and starts to play on his own with three principles to follow : to stay as close as possible to the obviousness of silence, to use a sound only when it's absolutely necessary to the whole part, and to seek some roots in his personal and cultural history.

This brings him quickly to a research of 'today's french music'. Something coming from masters of early twentieth century (Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, Gabriel Fauré...), learning from the discoveries of the electroacoustic pionneers (Bernard Parmegiani, Luc Ferrari, Pierre Henry, Eliane Radigue...), and crossing pop culture and post punk philosophy to know how to do short, simple, and melodic things.

Finally, this imaginary french music looks like short and melancholic instrumental pieces for piano, strings, and and wind instruments, haunted discreet electroacoustic layers. Sylvain Chauveau has made four albums (three on Les Disques du Soleil et de l'Acier, and one, 'Un autre décembre', on English label Fatcat), mainly recorded by his friend and sound engineer Joan Cambon. He composed the original score of the movie 'Feathers in my head', by Belgian cinematographer Thomas de Thier, selected at the Cannes festival of film 2003.

He played live in France, USA, Canada, Italy, Austria, Belgium and Germany. He toured with Sigur Rós, and improvised with Christian Fennesz.

He also plays in the ambient-rock duet Micro:mega (alongside with Fred Luneau, four albums released) and in Arca, cinematic avant-rock band (with Joan Cambon, two albums released). He recorded an album with American percussionist Steven Hess under the collective name of On. He's also a member of Ensemble 0 (with Stéphane Garin, Joël Merah and Maitane Sebastian).

He was born in 1971. He lives now in Paris.

Comment: This sounds more like what used to be called "New Music" in the late 80s-early to mid 90s, stuff I used to listen to a lot. Les Disques du Soleil et de l'Acier was one of the labels for this kind of music. I tracked down some of his other stuff and it does have that "new music" sound.

As far as this piece goes, it's primarily a guitar piece with some strings and sound effects. Seemingly repetitive, but not really. Nearly a half-hour of rather ethereal, somewhat melancholy and, as Yotamavni says, lovely music. Wouldn't mind hearing more from this person. This isn't really "electronic" music per se, but if you are into ambient, minimal, etc., check it out. Recommended.

Comment: That's a typical duo for computer and guitar, the whole in a very peaceful ambience. The kind of music to listen thinking of nothing : the thoughts are coming from themselves.... A little too short anyway.
