Biography of RJD2

Contrary to popular belief, heroes sometimes lurk behind the curtains, actively choosing to elude visibility. Make no mistake, though-if the mystery man behind the boards is the man behind a classic beat, you'll soon know his name. In the late 90's, producers crept from the shadows to seize the spotlight of mainstream hip-hop, as well as the pop charts. In the last few years, one man shows such as Moby, DJ Shadow and Timbaland have proved what underground hip-hop fans have known since Marley Marl's heyday-a talented producer can shine solo. Enter RJD2.

From 1998 to 1999, he saw success blossom as DJ/producer for the Columbus-based group the Megahertz, with two twelve-inch singles on Bobbito Garcia's legendary NY label, Fondle 'em records. This explosive entrance to the underground hip-hop scene gave way to shows from Europe to Japan, not to mention garnering mention in Vibe magazine's 'History of Hip-Hop' historical volume. Opening doors outside of the east coast, the MHz went on to appear on the Bay Area's ABB records compilation, Always Bigger and Better, Volume 1. Their contribution (entitled 'This Year') was voted best track on the ABB website, while competing against major label heavyweights such as Dilated Peoples and Defari.

In 2000, the praise only continued for RJD2, producing Copywrite's debut single 'Holier Than Thou' on Rawkus Records. The work certainly didn't stop there; spring of 2001 was RJD2's formal introduction to hip-hop as a solo artist on Def Jux Presents, a compilation showcasing the roster of his record label, Definitive Jux Records. Having to hold his own next to NYC underground legends such as Company Flow, Cannibal Ox, and Aesop Rock, RJD2 did no less. That summer he followed up this string of releases with his own twelve inch entitled 'June', which featured fellow MHz member Copywrite laying down two incredible book-end verses. Melding the hip-hop tradition of raw, gritty samples with a more classical approach to song structure, he has concocted a style of production that pleases the most discerning hip-hop scholar without compromising that old dance floor aesthetic.

2002 saw RJD2 release the critcally acclaimed debut 'Dead Ringer', which not only solidified his spot as one of the underground's top producers, but also caught the ears of Grammy-man ?uestlove of The Roots who called the album one of his favorite of the year. Not to mention even landing the track 'Ghost Writer' in a Saturn ad, with juggling solo ventures, producing rappers, and DeeJaying, the man is certainly in the hot seat at the moment. It has been said by many legendary producers that the ultimate goal is to move a crowd-not just to dance, but sometimes also to feel and think. In this vein, RJD2 is only continuing a time-honored tradition.

Comment: A great funky mix from RJD2, with loads of scratches. A bit short like most of the Breezeblock mixes, but the set worth it. Sound quality is pretty good.

Comment: Brilliant tracks here. I absolutely love the vibe of RJ's first album, dead ringer. I was a bit disappointed with his second. This set, however, captures the feeling of his first album well I must say. If you can relate, grab this one, although its a bit short, its still quite class.

Comment: The tracks on this kick ass but It would be a hell of a lot better if it didn't sound like it was coming off a cassette tape left in my trunk for a few months.... A lot of stuff on this is off of his promo "Your face or your kneecaps" -may I say one thing "The strut of a round butt" anyone?

Comment: This was my first exposure to RJD2, which was a long time coming as I have heard his name thrown around since before I started listening to electronic music. As the earlier comments stated, the setlength is a bit short and the sound quality is merely ok. I enjoyed his eclectic use of samples, especially the Jethro Tull one! I guess it touched a nerve in my inner classic rock dork. Anyway, good stuff here but not an essential download IMO.

Comment: This was an incredible set from RJD2, in fact there is only one quip I have with the whole thing is that it is entirely too short. Incredible Sound Quality, it literally jumps through my noise-cancelling headphones.

Comment: The first 12 minutes are just great!! Very varied and exciting to listen to. Then it gets rather boring for about 8 minutes! The last 8 minutes are great again! The set is much too short! Besides the poor middle part, thanks to the great beginning and end the set is worth a download!

Comment: just about the same as his records, which are good. Nothing too startling though. I enjoy his voice samples and the old school ochestral stuff. That's tight. A good set.

Comment: For hip-hop/funk RJD2 made a name for himself and got co-opted by Wells Fargo for their commercials. Probably one of the most widely appealing hip hop artists today.

Comment: This is a good mix by rjd2 although a bit too short. I saw him at Dour in Belguim. He was fucking amazing live with his band. He played all the classic tracks from Deadringer and Since We Last Spoke. He has very impressive turntable skills too. I hope he brings the show to Irish and UK festival circuits before the summer is over.

Comment: This track is a chill version of a hip hop mix. If your in the mood to chill with Lou Dog inside the van, This is your mix! It Has a sort of DJ Shadow feel to the mix.
The sound quality is amazing, very clear and crisp.
